Chicago, funded by philanthropy, is an ideal place for journalists to test new methods of reporting and storytelling. This will ensure the city gets adequate coverage during an era when media habits are changing.

Philadelphia's rethinking of traditional journalism practices has started an experiment that could have a reverberation across the country. It has made Philadelphia a pioneer in finding new methods of gathering and disseminating community information while helping citizens engage with and hold local government accountable.

While they earn accolades for their reporting, these young journalists also serve as mentors and foster collaboration across Chicago. They want to change the narrative and give back stories from Chicago's people.

Three Black Northwestern University alumni created The TRiiBE in February 2017 to change the narrative about their hometown and return ownership of its stories back to its residents. Their goal was to empower the community by giving them power to tell their own stories. They have been recognized for their work by organizations like The New York Times, ACLU and others.

Kalyn Bellsha, an education reporter from Chicago, and Melissa Sanchez received numerous awards for their coverage on the digital divide within Chicago's schools. They influenced policymakers and helped improve Chicago’s technology systems. In 2013, they were shortlisted in the Peter Lisagor Award For Excellence in Education reporting.

Sarah Karp is a staff reporter for The Chicago Reporter and she won the Casey Medal of Meritorious Journalism in recognition of her series on former abc 7 chicago news anchors (http://Illinoismail.top/)'s youth incarcerated in prisons, their struggle to remain in school. Her stories made waves in the media when they inspired the Illinois Department of Corrections, which implemented changes to improve conditions in prisons, allowing inmates to return to high school after being released or to find work equivalent to that of a high school graduate.

Karp was awarded the Justice Leadership Award by Treatment Alternatives for Safe Communities for her work in the area of crack babies. This organization helps those with mental illness and substance abuse disorders to get out of prison and into community services for treatment.

Journalism's financial future remains uncertain. To encourage innovation without promoting one model only, those who support journalism need to adopt a strategy that is inclusive and ensures they are encouraging all types of innovation. It involves investing in the business operation to reduce running costs while creating new sources of revenue.
