Radio's impact in America: from WGN to digital age
Before the digital revolution, radio was the main way that Americans got their news and updates. The radio provided an outlet for those unable or unwilling to use television and the internet.

chicago illinois homeless shelters was the home of 20 radio broadcasters that started airing broadcasts in 1924.

Sears had a mail-order facility and headquarters in Homan Square Chicago. WLS was created by Sears to capitalize its brand. WLS quickly became a major force in Chicago's market for radio.

As the radio industry expanded, stations began diversifying into various formats. WLS moved away from its rural listeners in favor top-40. WCFL soon followed suit; both stations gradually lost local appeal as other stations altered their formats in an attempt to attract more listeners.

In the 1980s, FM stations first began appearing on radio dials and quickly gained in popularity. The FM signal could be heard in a larger area, and the sound quality was superior to AM. Talk programming, which was quickly a huge success on FM, brought radio back to its roots as a news and entertainment medium.

Chicago's flagship radio stations still dominated Chicago AM dials by the 1990s. WGN changed from full-service to sports and talks, but WGN remained dominant. WGCI switched from a traditional format of news to a music outlet for adult contemporary. WVAZ merged into Clear Channel before becoming an AMFM.

WGN changed hands again in 1999 when it was acquired by Chancellor Media and converted into a news/talk outlet, discontinuing long-running morning program Eight Forty-Eight. WGN was the leader in the market until Nexstar bought it in 2007.

Nexstar experienced a series of staffing changes after that transition. Bob Sirott replaced Steve Cochran in the morning drive, Bill Leff took over Wendy Snyder's midday duties, and Justin Kaufmann left Nexstar in the evening. Nexstar is focusing on recruiting new talent as it strives to stay competitive.
